Hi there,
Thank you for subscribing to josh_n_jo, the tool we will use to keep you informed about our trip to Cairo. As promised in the invitation email, below is a more detailed explanation of what we'll be doing.
The Episcopal Church in Egypt has an established program that seeks to help Sudanese refugees currently living in Cairo. This program is called Joint Relief Ministry and has a number of different facets. Two in particularly that we hope to be associated with are Tukul Craft and the health clinics.
Tukul Craft trains refugees in how to make different sorts of arts and crafts to a professional standard. For examples of their products, see their web site (http://www.refuge-egypt.org/refuge_egypt/index.shtml) It is hoped that I will work with the Tukul Craft group, in particular enhancing their current web site. To reach a broader potential customer base, Tukul Craft would like to be able to sell their product overseas. This will increase the income generated by the refugees who aren't allowed to find full time employment in Cairo.
Hopefully I will also have a chance to design and make a few things myself, as it will finally put to use the four years I spent studying Industrial Design.
Joanna last year completed a Masters of International Public Health. Combined with her background in Environmental Engineering, she hopes to support the current medical clinics that run in the Cathedral for these refugees. Pubic health is a broad, community based approach to health and there will be numerous ways for her to contribute.
What initially inspired us to visit Cairo? In 2001 Mark and Annette Bennett came back from three years working there. While they were here, we heard about the work they had been doing and the need for further support. Since that time we've met others who have spent some time there and we have been challenged to go ourselves.
We are intending to go for only one year, whereupon we will come back to Sydney before deciding what to do next.
If you have any questions about our trip, what we will be doing or anything else, please don't hesitate to contact us at joshua@kuswadi.com. I will attempt to update our web site (http://joshua.kuswadi.com) to keep you informed of our goings on.
Thanks,
Joshua and Joanna Kuswadi
